“I’m just going to stop down in the restaurant to make sure Ad remembers that I need to work on the cake later tonight, and then I’ll be over,” Kit said into the phone at six o’clock that evening.

Kira was on the other end of the line and assured her that there was no hurry. “We did so much running around today in this heat that I’m wiped out. Cutty is treating us to pizza so I don’t have to cook. He’s also making us strawberry daiquiris, and we’re going to sit in the backyard in the shade to eat. So we’ll just wait to order until you get here.”

“That sounds terrific,” Kit said, meaning it because they genuinely had had a long day and a few hours of regrouping before she had to put the wedding cake together was just what the doctor ordered.

“Why don’t you ask Ad if he can ditch work and come, too?” Kira added.

She made it sound very casual but Kit suspected her friend was matchmaking.

Still, Kit hadn’t seen Ad since the night before and in her heart of hearts she knew that stopping downstairs to talk to him about the cake was just a way of getting a moment with him before she left for the rest of the evening. And if she was angling for a moment with him herself, she could hardly fault her friend for a little angling on her behalf. In the process of running more wedding errands that afternoon, Mandy had spilled apple juice all over Kit. And while she could have changed into something of Kira’s, a cool shower had sounded so appealing that she’d borrowed Kira’s car again to make a pit stop at the apartment, instead.

Of course she hadn’t needed to wash her hair, too, but she had. And when she’d chosen a clean outfit she hadn’t been thinking about an evening with Kira and her family. She’d been thinking about the end of the night when she would use Ad’s restaurant kitchen to put together the wedding cake.

Not that she’d picked out clothes that would be good to work in, because she hadn’t. The tight, white scoop-neck, cap-sleeved T-shirt she had on would be ruined if she got any chocolate ganache on it.

And the gray shorts? They weren’t as tight or as short as the shorts she’d worn at the start of the week, but what had really been on her mind when she’d picked them was the way Ad had looked at her legs when she’d worn those others…

“You should be ashamed of yourself,” she told her reflection.

But she didn’t spin away from the mirror and change. She just checked to make sure she didn’t need another coat of mascara, that her blush was well blended, and
